Hidden Biases of Good People Workshop

Broadly speaking, group-based bias encompasses varying degrees of stereotyping (exaggerated beliefs about others), prejudice (dis/liking others), and/or discrimination (unequal treatment of others) that can occur above or below conscious awareness. Scholars have labeled the subconscious form of group-based bias as implicit bias. This engaging and interactive virtual workshop introduces participants to the science behind the causes and consequences of implicit bias and examines its impact on individuals, school culture, decision-making, and organizational outcomes across a school system. Building on this foundational understanding, the session also explores how bias can operate at the organizational level through the attitudes, assumptions, and practices of a significant number or a powerful minority of current or former employees, shaping the experiences and opportunities of students, staff, families, and the broader school community in unequal ways.
